Chapter 6

“Kelly,” Brandon called again as he drew close to her. “Are you all right?”

“I-it’s c-c-cold,” she managed to hiss through clenched teeth.

Now that he was right next to her, Brandon could see clearly that she was wearing a ball gown. Snow had collected on the shoulders of her wool coat and on her hair, which was caught up in a fancy style. She hadn’t put on a hat for some crazy reason, and her head was soaked.

“Come on,” he said, brooking no argument. “We need to get you inside by a warm fire as fast as possible.”

Kelly made a shivery noise that didn’t quite form words and let Brandon take the reins to lead her horse on to the barn. He glanced over his shoulder, searching for Tildie in the thickening snow as he went. A surge of pride filled him as he spotted his sister, along with the dogs, effectively herding the flock into the sheepfold.

As soon as he and Kelly reached the barn, he dismounted and helped Kelly down from her horse. She was stiff and moved slowly, but somehow managed to land on her feet in a cloud of damp ball gown. Brandon had to resist the urge to pull her against him and wrap his arms around her for warmth. The gesture would likely lead to something far more than just hugging her, and even though it would warm them both up, he couldn’t cross the line like that. Instead, he rushed to remove the saddles from both his horse and Kelly’s, leaving the blankets over the horses’ backs for extra warmth.

Tildie rode into the barn when he was almost done, the dogs right behind her, and dismounted. “The sheep are safe from the storm for the time being,” she said, then turned to Kelly. “Aren’t you supposed to be at a ball?”

“I…t-the g-governor w-w-wa—” Kelly started, teeth chattering so much she couldn’t form words.

“Never mind the governor,” Brandon said, taking her hand. “Let’s get you inside and we’ll talk once you thaw.”

He whisked Kelly back out into the yard and across to the house. The wind was picking up to an alarming degree, and the snow was so thick that Brandon was worried they might miss it entirely. But a cheery light shone in the windows, and as they grew close, Lucy, Olive, and Beth’s faces could be seen in the windows.

“Is that the French toast lady?” Beth asked as soon as Brandon and Kelly were through the door.

“It’s Miss Kelly Quincy,” Brandon said, brushing snow off his shoulders and arms and stomping his feet to shake it off his boots. When he was done, he turned to brush Kelly off. “Is the fire nice and hot?” he asked, tugging off his gloves then going to work on the buttons of Kelly’s coat, which she was having a hard time undoing herself. “Miss Kelly needs warming up.”

“I’ll put more logs on,” Olive said, skipping across the room to the large fireplace. The dogs, who had burst into the house right behind them, bounced excitedly to the fireplace to help her.
